Interviewer: Hindi po ba kayo nagaalala sa pamilya nyo? (Aren’t you worried about your family?)
Flood Victim: Okey lang. Sanay naman kami sa hirap eh. (It’s okay. We’re used to hardship/poverty anyway.)
She smiles, toothless, as she watches her children swimming gleefully in the waist-high murky water.
If we can be desensitized to suffering and death in movies, why not in real life as well?
Our collective consciousness is so powerful it can get us out of poverty.
Or it can keep us in it forever.
