Meaning of “Everybody Wants To Rule The World”

I posted  a video of this song, “Everybody Wants To Rule The World” earlier on. I heard the song on Mum’s radio in the kitchen while I was washing my hands and suddenly thought–what exactly does the song mean? I Googled it and this is the interpretation that my soul is most comfortable with. We are all messengers, remember?

Welcome to your life; there’s no turning back
Even while we sleep we will find
You acting on your best behavior
Turn your back on mother nature
Ev’rybody wants to rule the world

(Comment by stayirie from – Here’s my opinion on the meaning of the song which, by the way, is a great tune. The first line sounds sort of sarcastic and spiritual at the same time. I think they’re saying that we chose to come here and even though the world’s in a bad way there’s no turning back. The rest of the verse sounds like government control, we have turned our backs on Mother Nature and instead of listening to our instincts and caring for the planet we are led by people whose only interests are ruling the world and polluting the earth.)

It’s my own desire, it’s my own remorse
Help me to decide. Help me make the most
Of freedom and of pleasure
Nothing ever lasts forever
Everybody wants to rule the world

(The second verse, I think, is a plea to the people–we all have our own desires and regrets but it’s not helped by people judging each other and putting each other down. We need to help each other to be free and make the most of our lives. If we do this we can be free of the control warned by the first verse and nothing lasts forever is just a motivation.)

There’s a room where the light won’t find you
Holding hands while the walls come tumbling down
When they do, I’ll be right behind you
So glad we’ve almost made it
So sad they had to fade it
Ev’rybody wants to rule the world

(I think this basically says you can be free of the brainwashing or whatever and when you are, the walls of the illusion will come tumbling down. Since they’re holding hands, it could show we have to do it together and support each other. ”So glad we’ve almost made it,” shows people are waking up to the s**t going on in the world and things are changing.)

I can’t stand this indecision
Married with a lack of vision
Everybody wants to rule the world
Say that you’ll never, never, never, need it
One headline, why believe it?
Everybody wants to rule the world

All for freedom and for pleasure
Nothing ever lasts forever
Everybody wants to rule the world

(In the last verse, they show they’re annoyed that the government are a bunch of useless wa****rs that can’t make a decision and have no idea about where the world should go. “Why believe the headline is simple” – it’s just lies. The last bit of the song just sums up what I said. The song title “Everybody wants to rule the world” I think is why we f*****d up in the first place and if we want to change we need to be equals. Peace y’all.)
